There are many pregnant women living in the U.S. within 100 miles of the boarder who have not been able to achieve a legal immigration status due to a broken and slow judicial system. In order to avoid institutional scrutiny, many women use mid-wives to help with the birth. The mid-wife would then get the birth certificate for the new born, which has been perfectly acceptable until the Trump administration took over. Since then, some boarder patrol agents have not accepted or believed the birth certificate from the mid-wife and would precede to deport both the mother and baby even if the child was born in the United States. The Citizen Umbilical Clamp aims to both offer a solution and a commentary to this problem. At birth the babies umbilical cord needs to be clamped in two places then cut. This umbilical clamp activates a time stamped GPS code when closed. The GPS coordinates display through the top casing, showing where the baby was born. The coordinates are sent to a secure location via cell towers where the information can be used in court if need be. The clamp also collects a snip of the umbilical cord for DNA analysis.
The open clamp depicts the United States with an enlarged Florida on the right and Mexico down to the bottom of Central America. When the clamp is closed the two sides come together to create a united America, including Central America.
